You will know what kind of a player Richard Yong is when you see his Hendon Mob profile and notice that he has recorded over $7.5 million in live poker earnings, even though he has cashed out in just 10 live events in his career. The 61-year old high-stakes player has now made headlines for winning just his second live poker title.
The Malaysian businessman took part in the 2018 Triton Super High Roller Series, Montenegro, and beat a total of 35 entries in the HKD 250k 6-Max Event, to register a win of HKD 3,046,000 ($388,024). Incidentally, Yong is the founder of Triton and he finished 6th in the same event of this series in 2017.
Yong also finished as runners up in the 2018 Triton SHR Main Event, losing to Manig Loeser in heads up. This time however, he beat US poker pro Steve Dwyer in heads up of the 6-Max Event, where the top 6 players were eventually paid out with a minimum cash prize of HKD 494,000 ($62,930).
Our readers may remember Yong from an incident which took place in 2014 where the FBI had raided a homegame in Las Vegas and arrested among others Malaysian businessman and high-stakes poker player Paul Phua, Yong and a few others. The case centered around an illegal betting operation involving the 2014 FIFA World Cup and was eventually dismissed for lack of evidence.
Richard’s son and 2-time Triton Super High Roller Series event champion, Wai Kin Yong, was also on the rail. While Richard is first on Malaysia’s all-time earnings list, his son is a close second, with over $3 million in live poker earnings. When asked about this win, Richard said, “Yes, I am feeling good, very happy that everybody joined my tournament, and I had a lot of fun. It has been a long time since I played full decks and I forgot how to play.”
However, the businessman had clearly not forgotten how to play, beating the likes of Dwyer, Isaac Haxton, Stephen Chidwick and other experienced poker pros on his way to winning the title. Overcoming a deficit, Yong did well to get the lead in heads up and eventually win the title, when his two pair proved to be superior to Dwyer’s two pair.
