Rene Von Reden Ships APT Taipei PC ME, Takes Home TWD 14.4 Million

Rene Von Reden of Germany has added himself to the poker record books by shipping the APT Taipei Poker Classic 2024 Main Event. The event is already in the record books as Taiwan’s biggest international poker event. Five gruelling days of some of the toughest poker hands saw one man turn up at the top of the cash list. Rene Von Reden of Germany took home TWD 14.4 Million (~$450,000) and an APT trophy, the former being the highest pay-off for any APT event in Taiwan.

The Main Event had an astounding 1,991 entrants and a prize pool of TWD 86 Million, and 295 entrants were in the money. For the championship, Von Reden and Abraham Ceesvin of Singapore were set up in a heads-up play that lasted almost 90 minutes.

The last hand saw Ceesvin come up with a K 6 , which Reden countered with a 9 2 . The board showed both of them 7 K 3 3 . The river then spurted out a Q , which had Reden take the Golden Lion, which is one of the most prestigious trophies in the poker community.

Reden is a relatively new player and, according to Hendonmob, has had his first cash only recently, in early January this year, at the Dutch Open Poker Series. Out of a total of 64 entries, he was the 7th highest payout, taking home $713. Before this, his best cash was $4,593 at the Rotterdam Poker Series in April 2024, when he cashed at the No Limit Hold’em – Turbo Freezeout #2. So, this win has added an enormous amount to his bankroll and more to his confidence in playing in the high-stakes games.

Events like these shine a spotlight not only on the various tournaments, players, and the game but also on its nature—which can change a player’s fate overnight. Poker history is strewn with incidents of players making a landslide amount and changing their destiny.

While no Indian was in the money in this event, APT Taipei PC 2024 saw several Indians cash out as the days progressed. Earlier, Rishi Mehra came precariously close to shipping the High Roller Event and took home TWD 3,484,000 (~₹90,79,924) in second place. Before that, Abhinav Iyer stood 2nd at the High Roller Double Stack.

APT Taipei PC 2024 is now over, and it has been an exhilarating experience for everyone involved and following the game, including the Indian poker community. With so many Indian players seeing money, they will surely inspire more and more poker players to go to the big leagues. Several younger players, particularly those from India, are rising in the ranks to become some of the most proficient poker players in the world.
