In last week’s class, I delved into the crucial concept of calculating Pot Odds and Equity, essential tools for making informed decisions at the poker table. Tilt, in poker, is a mental and emotional state where frustration, anger, or despair significantly impact a player’s decision-making. It’s a common experience for players of all levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals. When tilted, players often deviate from sound strategy, leading to poor and even disastrous results.

Imagine this scenario: You’re holding a strong hand, pocket Aces, and confidently bet. Your opponent, unexplainably, shoves all their chips in. You call, feeling confident in your dominant hand. However, your opponent reveals a miraculous two-outer, hitting their improbable draw on the river. This devastating ‘bad beat’ can easily trigger tilt. Players may become overly aggressive, chasing unlikely draws, or conversely, become overly cautious, folding strong hands out of fear of another bad beat.

Tilt can manifest in various ways, including:

  • Overplaying hands: Calling with weak hands, chasing draws recklessly, and bluffing excessively, often driven by a desire to recover losses quickly.

  • Work performance: Making errors at work due to stress, burnout, or frustration with colleagues or projects, impacting productivity and job satisfaction.

These examples demonstrate how tilt can negatively impact our lives in various ways, highlighting the importance of developing strategies to manage and mitigate its effects.

  2. Take breaks: When you feel yourself tilting, immediately step away from the table. Take a deep breath, go for a walk, or engage in a relaxing activity to clear your head and regain composure.
  3. Review your play: Analyse your recent hands objectively. Look for patterns of poor decision-making, such as chasing draws with weak hands or folding strong hands unnecessarily. This self-reflection can help you identify the root causes of your tilt and make necessary adjustments.
  4. Focus on the long term: Remember that poker is a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on playing your best game over the long term rather than getting caught up in short-term results or individual hands.
  5. Set bankroll limits: Playing within your bankroll limits significantly reduces the financial and emotional impact of losses. This helps to minimise the risk of experiencing the severe anxiety and frustration that can accompany significant financial losses.

  7. Learn to control your emotions: Practice mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, to help manage stress and emotions effectively. These techniques can help you develop greater emotional regulation and improve your ability to stay calm and focused under pressure.
