Day 2 of the PokerStars LIVE Asia Jeju Red Dragon Main Event saw 234 Day 1 survivors out of a record-breaking field of 613 return to action. After nine 60-minute levels, that number has been reduced further with China’s Qi Wang bagging the lead with 26 players remaining in the hunt for the title. The only Indian participant who made it to Day 2, Sumit Sapra, unfortunately was unable to sustain his stack and busted early on this day.
Wang climbed to the top of the counts in the one of the last hands played, ousting former Main Event Champion Bold Buyanjargal in the process to conclude play with a stack of 1,015,000. Both China’s Wei Zhang – who finished second in the counts with a stack of 866,000 – and Hong Kong’s Kevin Tse (565,000) flirted with the chip lead, with the latter finishing play seventh in the counts.
Day 2 proved to be an action-packed one that saw the money bubble reached and breached, with Liang Xu the man to burst it after his pocket Kings saw off Yuanchao Li’s ace-king, with the latter the last man to depart empty handed. This guaranteed the 72 remaining players a payday of at least ?4,410,000 and saw Xu make a spirited attempt to snatch the top spot.
Xu will be returning as the third largest stack with 795,000. Other notables still in the running include the USA’s Christopher Park (538,000), PokerStars Festival Korea Champion Tae Hoon Han (460,000), and China’s Xuming Qi who will be returning as the short stack with 128,000.

In addition to Buyanjargal, former champions Alan Lau, Qiu Ming Qin and Yoshitaka Okawa were in contention at the start of Day 2, though none could go the distance. Neither Qin or Lau cashed, with Lau departing around ten spots off the money. Okawa finished in 43rd, while the last of the field’s former champions – Buyanjargal – busted in 28th.
Other notables to cash included Malaysia’s Victor Chong (38th for ?5,640,000), former Baby Dragon Champion Feng Wen Chen (55th for ?4,660,000) and Taiwan’s Chi Ying Tsai (60th for ?4,660,000), whose departure left Wei Zhang as the last woman standing.
The 26 remaining players are guaranteed a payday of at least ?6,740,000, but all will be looking to make the nine-handed Final Table. Those that do will lock up a payday of at least ?24.52M, though all will have their eye firmly on the ?266M (~US$237,700) top prize, in addition to the title and best looking trophy in tournament poker.
While Sumit Sapra and the Indian run was shortlived in the Main Event, Team India did make its mark in the side events of this series. Known domestic regs Kunal Patni and Raghav Bansal took part, ran deep and cashed out in the KRW 220,000 Flipout event. Patni was the first to go in 24th place for KRW 615,000 (~INR 39,000) and compatriot Bansal follwed soon after in 20th place for a score of KRW 695,000 (~INR 44,000). Chao Bi and Hao Tang came into the headsup of this event and made a deal with Tang (KRW 16.2 million) taking the larger share but the title eventually going to Bi who pocked KRW 15 million for the win.
The above mentioned Indians then moved into their next; the KRW 3.6 million NLHE event which also saw the likes of Abhinav Iyer, Kalyan Chakravarty and MadOverPoker’s Zarvan Tumboli get into the mix. However Iyer (89,000), Chakravarthy (83,400) and Bansal (55,900) were the only ones who will return to play in today’s Day 2 action of this event. They are all looking to Tyler Jennens who is chipleader among the final 89 remaining in this event.
As we publish this report, Day 3 of the Red Dragon is already underway and will play down to the nine-handed Final Table. Stay tuned to GutshotMagazine.com as we bring you a round-up of this day as well as the final nine of this Red Dragon Main Event.
