Recap Of Top Asian Poker Events of 2024


Poker is becoming one of the biggest and fastest-growing markets in Asia and the world. Several poker tournament organizers have set their sights on Asian locales for their tournaments.The Asian poker scene in 2024 was marked by a series of high-stakes tournaments that attracted players from around the globe, offering substantial prize pools and showcasing exceptional talent. Here’s a recap of the top Asian poker events that defined the year:

Asian Poker Events in 2024:

Asian Poker Tour (APT) Events:

1. APT Taipei 2024 (28th February  – 10th March): This event, hosted at the Chinese Texas Hold’em Poker Club in Taipei, featured a Main Event with a guaranteed NT$65,000,000 (~US$2,000,000) prize pool. The tournament concluded with Daisuke Ogita clinching the title and taking home NT$12,944,020 (~$410,137). Notably, India’s Kunal Patni finished 8th at the Micro Main Event.

2. APT Korea Jeju 2024 (26th April  – 5th May): Held at Jeju Shinhwa World, the Main Event boasted a ₩2,000,000,000 (~$1,500,000) guarantee. China’s Xixiang Luo emerged victorious, earning ₩429,292,500 (~$311,843) and making history by topping the largest field in South Korean poker history.

3. APT Taipei Poker Classic 2024 (27th September  – 7th October): Returning to Taipei, this tournament offered a Main Event with an NT$65,000,000 (~$2,000,000) guarantee. Germany’s René von Reden secured the championship, winning NT$14,413,200 (~$456,503).

4. APT Manila 2024 (28 October—7 November): The main event, held at the City of Dreams Grand Ballroom in Manila, Philippines, had a guaranteed prize pool of ₱100,000,000 (~$1,717,431). Daniel Lee from the USA claimed the top spot, earning ₱15,060,000 (~$258,645).

5. APT Phu Quoc Vietnam 2024 (8th – 17th November): Set in the scenic Corona Resort & Casino Phu Quoc, Vietnam, the Main Event featured a ₫25,000,000,000 (~$990,000) guarantee. Jinlong Hu triumphed, taking home ₫4,710,000,000 (~$186,440). And India’s Avneesh Munjal shipped the High Roller event, taking home a career-best VND 1.541 billion (~₹51.34 Lakh).

Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Events:

1. APPT Manila (24th July – 5th August): Hosted at Cove Manila in Okada Manila, the Main Event had a buy-in of ₱ 80,000 (~$1,370) and a guaranteed prize pool of ₱ 55,000,000 (~$1,000,000). Xiong Cheng emerged as the champion, securing ₱ 15,000,000 

2. APPT Championship Manila (18th–27th October): Also held at Okada Manila, this championship event featured a ₱165,000 (~$3,000) buy-in and a guaranteed prize pool of ₱55,000,000 (~$1,000,000). Vietnam’s Hieu Ngo clinched the title, earning ₱11,610,000 (~$200,936).

3. APPT Cambodia (15th –25th November): The main event, which took place at NagaWorld Integrated Resort in Phnom Penh, had a buy-in of $1,650 and a guaranteed prize pool of $500,000. Christopher Mateo won the event, taking home $126,500 after a deal was made at the final table.

Triton High Roller Series in Jeju: The Triton High Roller Series in Jeju, South Korea, featured high-stakes action with significant payouts. German player Ole Schemion finished third in the $50,000 Pot Limit Omaha event, earning €227,000. China’s Ding Biao won the event, taking home over €1 million.

Other Notable Events:

USOP Grand Finale Hai Phong (29th November—11th December): The U Series of Poker (USOP) held its Grand Finale in Hai Phong, Vietnam, from November 29 to December 11, 2024, at the Pullman Hai Phong Grand Hotel. This prestigious event featured a record-breaking Main Event, attracting 1,958 entries and generating a prize pool of approximately VND 57.9 billion (~USD 2.28 million). Choi Hun Tae emerged victorious.

The series also included a Championship Event, won by John Matsuda, and concluded with Tao Wei Chang being crowned Player of the Year. The USOP Grand Finale solidified its status as a premier poker event in Asia, offering players a blend of high-stakes competition and luxurious amenities. Several other Indians were featured in other USOP events and consistently made the money lists, with seven even appearing in the Main Event.

Poker Dream 13 (15th to 24th November): Poker Dream 13, held at Resorts World Genting in Malaysia, was a significant event in the Asian poker calendar. The series featured various tournaments, including the Main Event, which had a guaranteed prize pool of MYR 5 million.

A highlight of the series was Mumbai-based professional Nishant Sharma’s historic achievement. He secured his third Poker Dream Main Event title, earning MYR 930,800 (~₹1.76 Crore). This victory marked his third Main Event win in six days, bringing his total live tournament earnings to approximately ₹11.47 Crore and elevating him to #8 on India’s all-time money list.

The event also showcased the growing presence of Indian players on the international poker scene. The Indian contingent achieved 53 cash finishes, including ten final table appearances and four titles. Notably, Abhishek Paul won Event #54: MYR 5,000 Mini High Roller, earning MYR 97,200 (~₹18.34 Lakh).

The 2024 Asian poker circuit and Asian poker events were characterized by record-breaking prize pools, international participation, and remarkable individual performances, solidifying Asia’s status as a pivotal hub in the global poker landscape.
