PPA acquired and rebranded by Poker Central

A couple of days back, the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) announced that it has re-branded itself to the ‘Poker Alliance’ in a news release that also mentioned that they will be led by Mark Brenner, termed as a ‘longtime business development and government relations executive.’

However, what they didn’t mention was that this re-branding and new leadership was all a part of an acquisition by poker media and entertainment company, Poker Central. They were struggling to make financial ends meet in recent times and that may have been the major reason for this acquisition.

The group was founded in 2005 as a not-for-profit group that was formed to protect poker players’ rights and liberties. They claimed to have added over a million members within the first three years of existence and they had a major role in reversing anti-poker laws and streamlining poker regulations over the years. 

Poker Central has been growing in significance recently and this could be great for the group, now baptized as the Poker Alliance. PPA Player Relations VP, Rich Muny, had a few months back announced that the organization was in financial problems and that it needed to raise $25k by the end of March to continue operating. Clearly, they weren’t able to do so.

They have dropped the word ‘Players’ from its new name, but the group promises that they will continue to protect players’ rights, with a focus on online poker. “I’m very optimistic about Poker Alliance’s potential to bring new innovations and a different skill set to the fight for poker, serving its membership and consumers in general,” said Muny, after the acquisition.
