Phil Galfond and Bill Perkins start second Galfond Challenge!

After a phenomenal show on Sunday, Phil Galfond is back for another challenge and this time with against Bill Perkins. The second edition of the Galfond Challenge kicked off on Tuesday, 14 April and the first day itself ended with Perkins grabbing $1,561.

Viewers expected Galfond to take a break after his miraculous comeback and the topsy-turvy ride against ‘VeniVidi1993’ which started on 22 January 2020. Just two days after winning the first leg, the owner of three WSOP bracelets is battling against hedge fund manager and a serious amateur player, Perkins. The entire challenge is slated to last 50,000 hands (twice the 25k Galfond played against VeniVidi) until one of them can notch up to win $400k. The buy-in is $20,000 and the blinds are $100/$200. With the match this time taking place on partypoker, the players got off to a bit of a slower-paced start. Both multi-millionaire players fought it out at a single table and the session last 388 hands.

The second round of the challenge begins just after Galfond had an epic comeback. In less than three weeks from where the game started, Galfond was down an astounding €900,000. In order to regroup his mind, he took a break and the challenge resumed on 4 March finally taking the lead on 6 April. With only 75 hands remaining he won a massive pot to give him a large enough lead where raced his way to win. In the end, Galfond came out €1,671 ahead and won a €100,000 side bet!

Galfond will be taking on Perkins and other players in his Thirst Lounge, a Twitch streaming channel set up in 2016 by Perkins that encourages “people to strive for bigger and better things in life.” Perkins banked the biggest cash of his career last year at the Triton Million for Charity event in London, placing 6th and winning £2,200,000.

Galfond added, “This challenge is different to my others because of the $400,000 finish line. A lot of people are expecting me to win this one, but they shouldn’t underestimate Bill or the swings of PLO. Anything can happen.”

Perkins also had something to say, “All my life I’ve been attacking challenging situations and this one seems to be the most formidable in quite some time. Not only does Phil have strategic knowledge, he has heart and mental fortitude. I look forward to playing the role of underdog.”
