#MondayMotivation: Goonjan Mall Opens Up About Lockdown, Family, Health Care & More

Poker player Goonjan Mall shipped the Big Game tournament on Adda52 last Sunday. The previous Sunday, he shipped the Excalibur event and both of these tournaments were high-value events. Mall swiftly made his way to the top after beating 200 entries.

The pro has been juggling between grinding, taking care of his son, handling business investments, and more. Mall spilled the beans about his winnings and how he handles all of this in such a suave manner. 

What is keeping you going even during lockdown?

I believe in the age-old saying, ‘the attitude of gratitude.’ Once you look at what is going on around you, the apocalypse that the country is going through, the fact that my family and I are healthy and happy keeps me going. I am also very glad that I can spend time with my wife and my son and I think that is the biggest factor that is keeping my spirits up during the lockdown.

What are the three important tips that newbies in the industry could pick up from you?

1. Focus on studying the game well. I have a 50/50 ratio of study and play. I analyze hand history and that has helped me advance my poker career.
2. Bankroll Management –  For me, poker was always a fun activity. Even if I lose some money, it doesn’t matter. I do get quite a lot of questions about my bankroll, and players need to understand that one needs to have a consistent idea of how bankroll should be managed. 
3. Mindset –  If you are confident that you have been studying and playing the spot well, then you will be able to play stress-free poker. Your mindset will be right only if you can study well.

Is poker the only game you excel at or are there other feathers in your hat too?

I am not very sure if I excel at poker. I used to play chess, sudoku in the past and my recent obsession is for Catan. Poker is the only game that I have been playing since years now.

Do you have any favourite poker platform? Which and why?

I do not have any favourites as such when it comes to poker platforms. I like the clean interface of Pokerstars, I love the entertainment of GGPoker, I like the support that PokerBaazi provides, I like the soft fields of Spartan Poker and Adda52 among others. I would recommend players to try out all platforms. Be it any platform, one must always experiment and play.

Besides poker, what are your other interests?

I am a business/start-up guy and I keep exploring new business opportunities. I keep investing in various kinds of business and I love doing things related to it. My wife has a travel-related youtube channel, so we are also into wanderlust. The three of us hope to travel more once everything gets back to normal.

With a nationwide lockdown forcing many people to adjust to a work-from-home routine, what major changes did you have to make?

As a poker player, I don’t think I had to make a lot of changes. The biggest thing I miss is the energy of going to the office, interacting with people, doing marathon meetings, and more. No zoom calls can ever compensate for the live setup. 

The new adjustment that I have to make is time management after my son was born. It is like a new life, life 2.0 for me as this is a completely new dimension. I am still getting adjusted on how to get that flow straight. When I am working I am completely cut off from work.

When you have a baby you have to cater to it when it wants to laugh or cry or wants to play. More than lockdown, I am trying to adjust to a work-from-home lifestyle with a baby around. I am sure, in a few months, I’ll be able to figure out a way. I wish everybody to stay home, stay safe, and get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Mall has been actively promoting the vaccination drive. He takes to social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter to educate the community about vaccination procedures and more. Players can always check his Twitter and YouTube accounts to know about vaccines and any information related to COVID-19.

Despite COVID-19 blues and hundred of other responsibilities, this player has managed to play his A-game. We hope to see him ship more tournaments and wish to see him win more titles
