Currently in a lockdown situation, India is still facing the wrath of coronavirus. Throughout the year, there has not been much festivities as social gatherings have not been allowed and Diwali was no exception.
Playing cards during Diwali is a ritual followed in India since decades now. People resorting to betting and gambling during this period has also been very prevalent. In Kamareddy town of Telangana, 109 people were arrested on Diwali night i.e. 14 November. The police recovered playing cards and seized INR 6,49,180 from the place that was raided.
Police conducted 61 raids across various gambling dens in Dharwad and INR 49 Lakhs were seized. From all the houses that were raided, 1 Lakh was seized from every household. In several places journalists and policemen were also attacked over for the fear of disclosing the identity. Many online gambling operators also reported spike in gambling activity during Diwali weekend
In another case, fourteen persons were caught by the Special Operations Teams (SOT) of Cyberabad Police for gambling at an apartment in Miyapur. Based on a tip, the SOT raided a flat in Miyapur and caught the organizer Yeruvu Nagi Reddy along with 13 others who were playing card games. The police seized INR 5.92 Lakh from the flat in Miyapur. The 14 persons along with their property were handed over to Miyapur police station. The Police said, “Reddy was organizing gambling at the flat and inviting participants. He was collecting commission on the amount won during the game.”
Gambling raids have been taking place throughout the year in India but when Diwali is around the corner, there is a spike in the number of men and women involved in betting and playing cards invloving money.
