Online poker operator partypoker recently hosted a massive online tournament series – the $10 million guaranteed KO Series. However, the final day of this KO Series was not one that they would want to remember in the future, as they were hit by technical issues which led to several tournaments being cancelled on the website.
The progressive knockout tournament series was live, and hundreds of players faced a reduction of value due to the cancellation of tournaments whose guarantees weren’t going to be met. This ‘server malfunction’ occurred approximately at 8 pm (GMT) on Sunday night, and players hit social media by 8:30 pm to find out what was happening.
However, partypoker was quick to respond on their official Twitter account, saying that they were aware of the issues and were working on resolving them as soon as possible. They also announced that some tournaments will be cancelled and some prizepools will be distributed as per the running statuses of the tournaments:
These technical issues only popped up a couple of days after partypoker published a video on their YouTube channel, announcing massive live poker tournament guarantees, $20 million guaranteed MILLIONS online event, and the launch of its new poker software. Clearly, the software wasn’t tested enough, was it?
Tom Waters, partypoker Managing Director, released a statement, saying, “It was a disaster for us as well as the players, the night of our biggest ever PKO tournaments and on the eve of the launch of our new Power Series. I understand that some players may not immediately return to partypoker given their experiences in the last 24 hours and I expect to see some sizeable overlays in the new Power Series MTTs that run from today. We will run the new Power Series as advertised and will not be reducing guarantees.”
As an apology, partypoker tweeted again on Monday, announcing almost $2 million to next Sunday’s schedule. Online poker players should accept this apology happily!
partypoker has been making giant strides in trying to overtake PokerStars as the number one poker operator of the world, but this mistake could’ve cost them dearly. However, while quite a few players will be busy complaining about it, loyal partypoker users will continue playing on the website and we believe that partypoker is still heading in the right direction.
