The Rise of Online Poker in India: Trends You Should Know

Poker and real-money gaming are having their moment in India. Other venues in India are becoming live poker hotspots, like Macau, Jeju, Malaysia, etc. However, only a few states allow live poker.

This has given rise to online poker apps, and companies are doing their best to make an impact, as evidenced by the number of poker app advertisements that have sprung up. India’s online poker market has experienced substantial growth, with its valuation reaching approximately USD 86.2 Billion in 2023.

Projections indicate a continued upward trajectory, with the market expected to attain a value of around USD 237.5 Billion by 2030, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.5% during the forecast period. This growth is fueled by increasing internet penetration, widespread smartphone usage, and a youthful demographic keen on digital entertainment.

Online real money gaming has several aspects going for it, and here are some of the trends that poker apps are putting up:

Online Games With Live Main Events:

Poker apps are creating a scenario where online and offline games are now coming together in flux. The initial games, like satellites, are run online, and the Main Event takes place in some of the biggest casinos in India. For example, the National Poker Series was hosted on the PokerBaazi app, and the main event was then held in Goa.

Massive Prize Pools:

The Online poker tournaments are gearing up with record and life-changing guaranteed prize pools as well, giving poker players a chance to experience the pure thrill of the game, right from the comforts of their homes. For example, the aforementioned National Poker Series had an ₹1 Crore GTD, as compared to common online games that have GTDS ranging between ₹500 and ₹4 Lakh.

State-Based Play:

State-based play has been around in cricket for several years in tournament series like the Ranji Trophy and became famous with the Indian Premier League. Online poker tournaments like the National Poker Series introduced this concept to poker by having state-based play and players in the winner’s state.
