The state of Gujarat has always seemed to be intolerant of all forms of gambling and other addictions and vices. Not many other states in India have games like PUBG banned, or even the consumption/selling of alcohol banned. Once again, we’re here to report some bad news for the residents of Gujarat.
The state government has initiated discussions to amend an existing law i.e. Gujarat Prevention of Gambling Act, to ensure it also covers online betting and gambling. It’s the cricket season in India with the Indian Premier League (IPL) underway and lakhs of people around the country find ways and means to place their bets on these games.
However, a recent report in the Times of India has suggested that the Gujarat police have requested to amend the existing laws against betting and gambling, as the current one gives them no power against such activities taking place online. Recently, the CID crime branch and home department officials met to bring changes in the existing gambling laws in Gujarat, as per Ahmedabad police chief AK SIngh.
The police department spoke about how the current laws only cover betting and gambling at physical locations and how it is difficult to clamp down on online gambling. Singh also spoke about banning the game of poker in the state. The matter of poker has been an ongoing case in the Gujarat High Court since December 2017 and the latest development saw the hearing being delayed to 20th June.
It was not too long ago that 10 students were also arrested in Gujarat for playing PUBG. For all timely updates on the gambling/betting scenario in Gujarat as well as other states in India, keep following GutshotMagazine.com.
