The coastal city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh has a storehouse of cautionary tales for potential online gamblers from the state. Just a few months ago, a Doctor from Visakhapatanam won INR 50 lakh and today we hear about the death of an individual.
A 33-year-old man from Visakhapatnam committed suicide on Saturday as he was incurring huge debts in online gambling. The deceased has been identified as M Sateesh, belonging to Kothapet in Gopalapatnam mandal, a fitter with the Naval Dockyard in Vizag.
The police have confirmed that Sateesh was under the debt of INR 15 lakh. Sateesh’s father mentioned that they had paid off INR 8 from the total debt amount by selling off his mothers jewellery and his mortgaging their house. For the remaining money, out of Sateesh’s salary of INR 35,000, INR 30,000 went towards interest. Despite the support from his family members, Sateesh’s father says that he was still addicted to online gambling, which eventually resulted in the mishap.
Acknowledging that online gambling had turned into a huge problem for the citizens, the Andhra Pradesh government recently banned online gambling. The state government in September amended the AP Gaming Act – 1974, imposing harsh penalties for the offenders. According to the new law, the offenders would be awarded a punishment of six-month imprisonment, and two-year jail-term for repeat offenders.
This AP Gaming Act was enacted according to observations that in all online gaming activities consumers spend large sums of money without actually being able to control the outcome of the result. However, despite the ban, it has been noted that many betting and gambling websites are still accessible in Andhra Pradesh. Specifically, a check on the gambling website rummy online revealed that it is still active and accessible to the larger audience.
