On Monday this week, the American state of New York inched closer to achieving legalization of sports betting within its region. New York State Gaming Commission, the apex body of the state which deals with gaming related issues, has unanimously approved a 33-page set of proposed rules that would allow sports wagering in four casinos in upstate NY.
The United States Supreme Court had ruled in May 2018 making sports betting legal across the country. Before this decision, Nevada was the only state to command a monopoly on betting parlours, due to a law made in 1992.
Since the Supreme Court order, many states such as New Jersey, Mississippi, Washington DC, Delaware and Pennsylvania have legalized sports betting within its territory. On the opposite side, recently, Michigan’s outgoing governor Rick Snyder vetoed a sports betting legalization bill after expressing concerns for the citizens. Connecticut has seen a draft sports bill submitted and is next in line to legalize it.
Coming to New York, the draft bill now will be subject to a 60-day public comment period. NY Governor Andrew Cuomo has expressed his support to legalize sports betting in the state. Wagering operations in the state are expected to begin in early April. March Madness, NBA’s popular series, will be in the books by then but baseball will still be there.
The four NY casinos included in the draft bill are Resorts World Catskills in Monticello, Rivers Casino in Schenectady, del Lago Casino in Tyre and Tioga Downs in Binghamton. About online betting, it is still not clear if NY will approve it, but the Cuomo administration has opinionated that online betting is a time-consuming process and is not a priority now.
New York’s native American casinos, something which New Jersey lacks, will also be allowed to offer sports bets to its customers. Turning Stone, a successful casino owned by Oneida Indian Nation will likely open sports betting.
With this welcome news, the casino operators are more than happy that their state is taking measures to liberalize sports betting. Turning Stone has already begun construction on its betting parlour which features a 48-by-9 feet curved screen for its bettors. Other casinos in the mix have also begun similar efforts.
