“My Poker Dream Achievement Is One In A Billion” – Nishant Sharma

Gutshot Magazine has always strived to bring to you the best poker stories from India and around the world. One such story came recently when Mumbai-based Nishant Sharma did the unthinkable and unimaginable – becoming the first ever Poker Dream Triple Crown winner, taking down three Main Event titles at this Asian live poker series. He smashed through the Main Event field at Poker Dream 13 (Malaysia) to take home one of his career-best scores of around ₹1.76 Crore.

It’s not the first time he’s made the Indian poker community proud, already having multiple poker achievements in his bag. However, winning Poker Dream 10, 11 and 13 was something no one would’ve seen coming, winning all three of the last Main Events he participated in (he didn’t play in Poker Dream 12). We at Gutshot got in touch with Sharma for a free-wheeling conversation about this never-done-before achievement.

Nishant Sharma Poker Dream interview

Hi Nishant, congrats on this historic treble at Poker Dream! How does it feel to be the first person to do so?

It feels amazing. It is hard to describe the feeling. As I am a Maths guy, it wouldn’t be repeated, at least in our lifetime. The odds of beating the back-to-back Main Event in a 2000-odd entries field, I think are probably one in a billion or maybe more. So yeah, you probably won’t see that happening again. God was on my side.

Before heading to Malaysia, you expected a soft field. How did you prepare for the tournament, and did it meet your expectations?

I have been to Malaysia before. The field is soft and more solid, which helps my gameplay a lot, as I am a big, aggressive player. It is completely different from how we play in Vietnam. In Vietnam, you have to stay solid and wait for the good cards. In Malaysia, it is the other way around. I like the Malaysian field more than other places. The tournament was good. Except for the cashout process, which is very tedious, I liked playing at Poker Dream.

How does this victory compare to your previous wins, both emotionally and strategically?

The amount is big, but I think more than the money (MYR 930,000), the bigger achievement for me is to win back-to-back titles. I had a bet with Zarvan Tumboli – if I win it the third time in a row, he will put a big poster of me in his room. It is fun for me. I know I have a one-in-a-billion achievement, so yeah, it feels great.

Can you share any key hands or moments that were pivotal to your success?

Everything was okay before the heads-up. I won a big pot at heads-up. I was hero calling with middle pair, 95 off. I think that was the turning point for me. The other guy had more chips than me. After that hand, I became the chip leader, and everything went as I hoped for.

What advice would you give to aspiring poker players who want to follow in your footsteps at Asian events?

Study hard and follow good bankroll management. When you come to live series, don’t be afraid of pulling off some great folds and great hero calls, even if the book says you are top of the range and you have to call. Don’t be afraid to fold there. If you think the other guy has it, he has it. It doesn’t matter how good your hand is. The main thing is the bankroll; just follow your bankroll. Don’t punt off 50 percent of your bankroll in one or two series.

It was a great experience speaking to Nishant about his recent poker exploits. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours, and more importantly, we’re excited to see a picture of Nishant in Zarvan’s room now. Will he follow through with this challenge?! We’ll wait and watch!
