NASCAR now open to betting on its races

“I wanted to go all in on gambling last year,” NASCAR executive Steve O’Donnell said. The company, National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, Inc. (NASCAR) has decided to offer sports betting and will now be on every sportsbook in Nevada and beyond.

This was long overdue for NASCAR, but it took a step back and scanned the whole gambling scenario before implementing the guidelines for the rulebook for this season. NASCAR partnered with Sportradar Integrity Services to come up with a comprehensive gambling policy which is intended to protect the sport from cheating and fraud.

“We have so many people that are linked to the cars. I think the integrity is a big piece to it,” O’Donnell further added. In May 2018, the US Supreme Court struck down the 25-year old federal law that banned sports betting. This historic decision meant that states could decide for themselves whether they want to legalize sports betting in its region or not. Fantasy NASCAR has also been inaugurated and will allow bettors to draft line-ups before every race, through Fanduel and Draftking.  

NASCAR, headquartered in Daytona Beach, Florida, has sanctions over 1,500 races at over 100 tracks in 48 US states as well as Canada, Mexico and Europe. NASCAR has presented races at Suzuka and Motegi circuits in Japan. Its three largest series are the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, Xfinity Series and the Gander Outdoors Truck Series, along with numerous regional series.

 A stakeholder in the business, John Hensley of Dover Downs said, “I would consider it a success from the standpoint of the fan interaction, the fan education. We never went into it looking at it as a revenue generator. We always looked at it as just an additional amenity for that motorsports fan. Just based on the experience and word of mouth from the fall race, I would anticipate a greater flow of traffic for the spring, for sure.”

Some bookies have already supplied their betting lines. William Hill offered 5:1 for Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, favourites of 2019 Cup series. 2018 Champion Joey Logano is at 7:1 odds to win the race. There are more gambling tie-ups in the coming time for NASCAR. Speedway Motors Inc. and EquiLottery Games have already announced plans for Car Cash, a three-number lottery draw game based on race results of NASCAR.
