Mississippi 4th US state to offer sports betting

A couple of days back, Mississippi became the fourth state in the United States of America to accept bets on live sporting events. This news comes as a result of a major ruling in May this year, where sports betting and gambling was made a legal activity across the USA.

Ever since then, Delaware and New Jersey were quick to allow staking on sporting events, while the state of Nevada has had legal sports betting since a long time, thanks to the 1992 law that the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) struck down for this particular state.

Now, that law that prohibited sports betting has been overturned all across the country, with each state being given the power to make their individual decisions. Now, Mississippi has become the 4th state in the country to legalize sports betting, while a few more are lining up to join them.

This was a much-anticipated move in the state and bets were first accepted on Wednesday, at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi and the Gold Strike Casino in Tunica. Both these casinos are owned by MGM Resorts International, a company planning on expanding its sports betting businesses, recently partnering with NBA and WNBA.

There are over 30 casinos in the state of Mississippi and more are expected to start accepting sports bets in the coming days and weeks, as suggested by Allen Godfrey, Executive Director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission. Sports betting in the state has launched just in time for the college and professional football (American) seasons. The sports betting market in Mississippi is estimated to be around $2 billion annually.
