Master Poker Like A Pro: The Ultimate Guide To Pot Odds

Struggling to play like a pro? Looking to dominate the poker felts? To do so, the secret lies in understanding pot odds and making moves like a poker wizard. In this article sponsored by A23 Poker, we break down pot odds, making it easy for you to make better choices at the poker table. Let’s learn step-by-step how to improve your game and make informed decisions.

What Are Pot Odds?

Pot odds compare the size of the pot to the cost of calling a bet. They help you decide if calling is a good idea based on the possible winnings. They help you determine if it’s mathematically correct to call a bet based on the potential return.

Calculating Pot Odds

  1. Calculate the Pot Size: Add up the total money currently in the pot.
  2. Calculate the Call Amount: Identify how much you need to call to stay in the hand.
  3. Form the Ratio: Divide the pot size by the call amount to get the pot odds ratio.

Formula: Pot Odds = Pot Size ÷ Call Amount

  • Pot Size: ₹100 + ₹25 (opponent’s bet) = ₹125
  • Call Amount: ₹25
  • Pot Odds: ₹125 ÷ ₹25 = 5:1

Let us show you an example on the flop:

  • Your Cards: A♠️K♠️
  • Flop: 2♠️7♠️Q♥️
  • Outs: 9 spades left in the deck
  • Winning Odds: 9 outs × 4 = 36%

Here’s an example of the Turn:

  • Your Cards: 8♦️9♦️
  • Board: 3♠️4♥️7♣️T♦️
  • Outs: 8 cards (6♠️ and J♠️)
  • Winning Odds: 8 outs × 2.2 = 17.6%

Using Pot Odds Preflop

Pot odds preflop helps you decide whether to call a bet before any community cards are dealt. It’s the ratio of the current pot amount to the cost of making a call.

  1. Situation:

  • Pot Size: ₹100
  • Your Hand: 5♠️ 6♠️
  • Opponent’s Bet: ₹20
  • Cost to Call: ₹20
  1. Calculating Pot Odds:

  • Current Pot: ₹100
  • Opponent’s Bet: ₹20
  • Total Pot After Your Call: ₹120
  • Cost to Call: ₹20
  • Pot Odds: ₹120 (total pot) / ₹20 (cost to call) = 6:1
  1. Decision Making:

  • Winning Odds Needed: For a profitable call, your hand should win at least once in every 6 tries (about 16.7%).
  • Hand Potential: Your 5♠️ 6♠️ is a suited connector, which has good potential to make straights and flushes.
  1. Conclusion:

  • If you believe your hand has at least a 16.7% chance of winning against your opponent’s range of hands, it’s a good idea to call.
  • Considering the pot odds and the potential strength of your hand, calling with 5♠️ 6♠️ here is a reasonable play.

You can make more informed and profitable decisions in poker by understanding pot odds.

Comparing Pot Odds to Drawing Odds

To make the best decision, compare your pot odds to the odds of completing your draw. Drawing odds tells you the probability of hitting your needed card to complete a winning hand.

Calculating Drawing Odds

  1. Count Your Outs: Determine how many cards in the deck will complete your hand.
  2. Determine the Drawing Odds: Estimate your chances of completing your hand by counting your outs.

Decision Making

  1. Favourable Pot Odds: If the pot odds are greater than the drawing odds, it’s profitable to call.
  2. Unfavourable Pot Odds: If the pot odds are lower than the drawing odds, it’s advisable to fold.

Check out an example for the same:

With a flush draw and 9 outs, your chances of hitting the flush on the next card are about 4 to 1

  • Pot Odds: 5:1
  • Drawing Odds: 4:1

Since the pot odds (5:1) are greater than the drawing odds (4:1), it’s profitable to call the bet.

How To Put This In Practical Use

  1. Quick Calculation: While playing, you often need to make quick decisions. Practice helps you estimate odds faster.
  2. Adjust for Implied Odds: Consider potential future bets and how much you can win if you hit your draw, adjusting your decision accordingly.
