Supreme Court Stays GST Notice Against Majestic Pride Casino Group

In more good news and a broader respite for the real money and poker industry in India, the Supreme Court has stayed a GST Notice imposed on Majestic Pride Casino Group. The Goa State GST authorities served the notice on Majestic Pride Casino Group to three entities associated with the Majestic Pride Casino Group.

This is the latest development in the various actions that the Government of India has taken against the real-money gaming industry in India. While the Government had issued a 28% GST on all deposits, the industry heaved a sigh of relief when, in 2024, the Supreme Court stayed that order in response to several cases filed against the order, including one that Gameskraft did. Without the stay order,  the GST notices could have become tax demands, but that was not to be so.

If the Supreme Court had decided otherwise, it would have been the death knell for the casino and real money gaming industry, not just in Goa but all over India. With the next hearing set for March this year, it remains to be seen what happens to the future of poker and real-money gaming in the country.

GST Impact on the Indian Real Money Gaming Industry

The real-money gaming industry in India has faced an uphill task over the past few years because the Government demanded a massive 28% GST deduction on deposits. The move caused several layoffs and was touted as the reason the nascent industry would self-destruct.

However, online and offline poker tournaments have survived over the past few years. Deltin Poker Tournament’s DPT Xpress, a live poker tournament, is even earmarked for February 2025 in Goa. Also, more companies are either investing in or buying entities from the real-money gaming industry, showing confidence in the market and its legality.
