Krafton India Appoints Sean Hyunil Sohn As Its New CEO


Battlegrounds Mobile India developer Krafton has appointed Sean Hyunil Sohn as its new CEO. The move is a step toward strengthening its operations in India.

After cancelling all the publishing rights of PUBG Mobile from Tencent following the game’s ban in the country, Krafton has taken numerous steps to improve its position in the Indian market. It recently launched the Indian version of PUBG under the name Battlegrounds Mobile India. 

The appointment of the new CEO aims at strengthening and expanding the developer’s position in the Indian markets as well as in the Middle Eastern and African markets.

The company launched an Indian subsidiary last year in November, following which it made several big investments in the Indian gaming sector. Some of the investments include the $22.4 million investment in Indian gaming giant Nodwin Gaming and $9 million investment in Indian streaming platform Loco.

Sohn joined PUBG  corporation in the year 2017 as the Chief Financial Officer. When Krafton merged with PUBG Corporation in 2020, Sohn headed the investment division which looked after the company’s investments in global games as well as Indian games. Sohn’s appointment makes him the first representative of Krafton’s Indian subsidiary.

Recently, Krafton listed its Initial Public Offering (IPO) on South Korean Exchange. The company is expected to raise close to $3.8 billion through this IPO, making it the second largest debut in the South Korean capital. The company plans to use 30% of the IPO funds for investments in the markets of India, Middle-East and North Africa.

Launched on July 2nd, 2021, BGMI has managed to surpass 46 million downloads on Android devices alone. The game is yet to launch on iOS devices. The game will soon reach the 50 million milestone and the brand is offering its players some rewards to encourage more downloads.
