Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai expressed that the state government is helpless when it comes to regulating the industry in the state. He told the Legislative Assembly on Monday that operators who provide online games with wagering are ‘too powerful.’
The Karnataka state government enacted a law that imposed a ban on online games in October 2021. But the Karnataka High Court struck down the same on 15th February. “We carefully studied the laws of other states that banned online gaming and also enacted a comprehensive law after plugging all the loopholes. Despite that, online gambling has been going on. This is the situation of other Indian states as well which clearly shows us how powerful online gambling operators are.”
Congress MLA Ramesh Kumar had earlier pointed out that the betting menace during Indian Premier League (IPL) was only growing. Kumar added, “We have made the game of cricket a race. Please ask the police to crack down before the situation gets out of control. I stood my ground since the time I found out that the menace is ruining families,” Bommai added while stating that several officials had tried to dissuade him from bringing a new law to regulate online gaming.
Bommai also revealed that an anonymous gaming operator had approached him with the offer to provide free COVID-19 vaccines to one lakh people in Shiggaon (Bommai’s constituency) if the politician agreed to drop his efforts to ban online gaming.
