Everyone’s on board the Deltin Royale in Goa right now, where World Poker Tour (WPT) is hosting a 7-day series for Indian poker players. WPT Prime India 2023 has been super fun so far and today, along with the Ship It NLH and WPT Main Event, there was the Ladies NLH Event taking place as well, which turned out to be entertaining as well.
A total of 26 entries registered to the ₹12,500 buy-in event and that meant a prize pool of slightly less than ₹3 Lakh. As per the norm in this WPT India 2023 series, around 12.5% of the field was to be paid and this means 4 players to take home a pay cheque. And the biggest of them went to Agra’s Kanchan Sharma.
We say another because it was April 2022 when she won the DPT Ladies Event in Goa itself and here too, she bossed her way through the women’s field. She was given some tough competition by her contemporaries, but she took the lead slightly before the final table was set, and there was no looking back from there.

She took the lead when the 9-handed final table began and once the Ship It tournament concluded, the ladies moved on to play on the featured table in Deltin Royale. Here, players dropped out over time with Simran Malhotra finishing in fourth and Simran Sharma finishing in third place, allowing heads-up to begin between Kanchan and Radhika Shankar.
We asked Sharma about the Ladies NLH tournament and her win. She said, “It was an amazing tourney. It is always lovely to play WPT and winning a title always feels good.” We also asked this Agra girl about her thoughts on heads-up and she said, “I was very confident when heads-up began.” Sharma was confident when it comes to shipping the Ladies NLH event and we couldn’t be more happy for this poker dynamo.
Kanchan held the lead and eventually, she took down the title and the biggest prize money of the night. There were quite a few friends railing the two towards the end, and the top prize of ₹1,33,000 went to Sharma, adding yet another major achievement (and title too) to her poker resume.
It was Kanchan’s Pocket Queens against Shankar’s A9 in the final hand, with the Queens holding their ground. Shankar took home the runner-up prize of ₹80,000. It was a small tournament in terms of entries but a good one, promoting more women to take up the game of poker. For more updates from WPT Prime India 2023, stay tuned to GutshotMagazine.com…
