Kalyan Chakravarthy leads 3 Indians at WPT Vietnam HR Day 1A

In India, the name Kalyan Chakravarthy is becoming synonymous to ‘High Roller’. Very rarely do you see this poker pro taking part in smaller tournaments, as he seems to love playing in and doing well in High Roller tournaments across the world. Once again, we’re here to report his dominance in an HR Event, this time in Vietnam.

He, along with other Indians in attendance, signed up to the WPT Vietnam HR yesterday, part of the World Poker Tour DeepStacks (WPTDS) series currently taking place in Pro Poker Club, Ho Chi Minh. The HR had a buy-in of VND 50,000,000 (~INR 1.5 Lakh) and had two starting flights, one which was played yesterday and one which begins at 12:30pm local time today.

On Day 1A of this tournament, a healthy field of 64 entries joined and quite a few Indians registered including Madhav Gupta and Manoj Pentakota, but they unfortunately couldn’t get a bag by the end of the day. However, those who did manage to get bags were Chakravarthy, Abhinav Iyer and Nikunj Jhunjhunwala.

All of these players have brilliant live records to their names, with Jhunjhunwala recently winning the WPT India Main Event in Goa. Iyer has his career-best live score at this same venue, winning the APT Main Event here in January, while Chakravarthy has a long list of poker accomplishments to his name so far.

Yesterday was indeed a good day for Team India in Vietnam, with Alok Birewar progressing to the final 14 in the Main Event as well. Coming back to the HR however, Chakravarthy seems a big favourite to go on to win it from here, as he has an overwhelming lead. His stack of 1,696,000 is more than double the next best stack, while Iyer is third with 578,000 and Jhunjhunwala is 11th of the 13 who progressed, with 205,000 in chips.

Day 1A chip counts:

  1. Kalyan Chakravarthy Cheekuri – 1,696,000
  2. Tsang Ka Yu – 723,000
  3. Abhinav Iyer – 578,000
  4. Tran Duc Phuong – 563,000
  5. Lee Wai Kiat – 556,000
  6. Edward Yam – 539,000
  7. Quang Nguyen – 385,000
  8. Iori Yogo – 331,000
  9. Franc’s – 258,000
  10. Han Fei – 216,000
  11. Nikunj Jhunjhunwala – 205,000
  12. Matthieu Lamagnere – 191,000
  13. Gong Wei – 164,000
