Justin Bonomo Showed Some Real Guts Against Phil Ivey In WSOP 2023 $100K High Roller

The All Time Money List number one tanking against poker GOAT Phil Ivey, would be a painful sight but nobody would miss that. Justin Bonomo went heads-up with Ivey in Level 11 of the $100K High Roller event at the ongoing World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2023 in Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. The High Roller had the who’s who of the international poker circuit marking their attendance. We appreciate Bonomo’s guts but tanking would be a unecessary thing to do against Ivey.

A video which surfaced on Twitter shows Bonomo taking his own sweet time to revert Ivey’s all-in call (with just Ace-high). The Fairfax-born player who has been accused of cheating had A♥ 8♠ while the 10-time WSOP bracelet winner had A♣T♠. Ivey from the cutoff position threw in his tournament life (620,000 chips), and Bonomo made the call after scratching his head (not literally) for over a minute.

Tanking for over a minute with 8-pair, knowing well that his rival could have Queen or a hand better than his was a gutsy move by Bonomo. When Ivey flipped his A♣T♠ with the board flaunting 9♦ 8♥ 3♣ 7♦ Q♠, Bonomo knew he won that hand and had sent the GOAT to the rail.

Ivey did return on Day 2 of the $100K High Roller event before the late registrations ended, but failed to make a deep run. Bonomo on the other hand displayed impressive moves and made the final table. Sadly for this famously polyamorous player, he took the 7th spot for $362,279.

After Bonomo exited in the 7th spot, there are now six players remaining in this game. The chip lead is Jans Arends. With the top prize of $2,576,729, the final six will fight tooth and nail for that coveted prize money. Adrian Mateos and Jeremy Ausmus are looking to up their bracelet tally in the High Roller event and only time will tell if they make it happen.
