Jimmy George wins prestigious SSS Gold Edition Main Event

It was the first time Spartan Poker combined small and big buy-ins to create a unique series called Spartan Super Series (SSS) Gold Edition. Here, 5 days of online poker action took place between 8-12 May 2019 and by the end of the series, we had numerous winners and players walking away much richer than before.

However, the biggest winner of them all had to come from the prestigious SSS Main Event INR 70 Lakh GTD, a tournament which every poker player in India eyes every time a new SSS series is announced. With a massive buy-in of INR 11,000, a total field of 779 entries emerged in last night’s SSS Main Event, passing the guarantee to create a bigger prize pool of INR 77.9 Lakh.

From this field, only the top 71 players were to be paid with the minimum cash prize being INR 29,602. The competition was always going to be tough and among the many known players who busted between 56th-71st to get a min-cash on the night were Nishant Sharma (71st), Ram Kakkar (65th), Guneet Kwatra (64th), Rohit Mishra (63rd) and others.

The next set of pay-outs were between 40th-55th and some more known names busted during this time including Arsh Grover (48th), Aditya Sushant (41st), Goonjan Mall (40th), and others. Sahil Agarwal (36th), Pranjal Gandhi (31st), Kanishka Samant (26th), last night’s SSS SuperStack winner Sumit Sapra (16th) and Neel Joshi (12th) soon followed.

From 11th place onwards, every player was guaranteed a 6-figure score and the first person to hit the rail was Jay Pandya aka ‘Ba Ba Black Sheep’, who busted in 11th. Former Millionaire winner Bunty Batra aka ‘hitesh bhai’ was another known player in the mix, finishing 9th. Bibek Karki soon followed in 7th place for INR 2.47 Lakh. Deepak Bothra aka ‘chimpoo’ finished 3rd for INR 6.78 Lakh.

The pay-outs now took a massive jump and the two still in contention would’ve begun imagining themselves as the next SSS Main Event champion, but only one could get there. And yesterday, it was Jimmy George aka ‘Jabberwocky’ who went on to take down the SSS ME title and a massive pay-check of INR 15,03,740.

It was an outright victory as he beat Chandan Arora aka ‘dark fish’ in heads-up. In Level #54 of the tournament, the blinds had risen as high as 80k/160k-15k and George was slightly ahead with 6.8 million chips over his opponent’s 4.9 million chips. The final hand was pocket Queens vs pocket Aces and both players played it cool. The board rolled out 4d 3h 6s 6h Jc and George shoved on the turn only to receive a call and find out he was the champion. As for Arora, he did brilliantly too, but would have to be content with the runner-up prize of INR 9,47,264, which is quite a handsome amount in itself.

Gutshot spoke to the winner after this massive victory and he said, “It feels great to finally win my first ME. It was long overdue. There have been instances earlier when I was in a good position in the death stages but lost because of some really bad beats. This time I played tight and sensible till the end. I didn’t bleed chips unnecessarily and played my big hands well. I knew I was up against the best players in the country and that I had to be on my A game if I were to take it down. There was a crazy card rush on the final table which actually put me in the lead. From there, I just knew that I had to hold on to my chips while the others knocked each other out. It worked!”
