Jeremy Wien wins WSOP 2018 Event #20

It has been almost 2 weeks into the 2018 World Series of Poker and the excitement is growing each day, with more and more first-time winners emerging. Out of three bracelets awarded yesterday, 2 were first time winners and here’s another first time gold bracelet winner in Jeremy Wien, who won Event #20: $5,000 NLHE.

We reported Shawn Buchanan leading the chip counts at the end of Day 3 of this event with the final 8 survivors coming into the final day, but he was the third to hit the rail on Day 4, after Richard Tuhrim and David Peters. It was Spanish poker pro David Laka who was on a hot run on the final table, until he met Wien in heads up.

Laka is a short-handed and heads up specialist and when he came into the final stage, he had a 4:1 chip advantage over Wien, so it was almost certain who would win this battle. However, Wien was determined, and he overcame his chip deficit to take the lead and eventually win his first ever tournament at the WSOP, along with $537,710 for the first place. A total of 518 entries registered to the tournament. In the final hand, his pocket Aces beat Laka’s pocket queens!

“It’s pretty surreal. I never really actually expected that it will ever happen, but I dreamed about it,” he said after this big win. He further spoke about the competition he had to face on the final table, saying, “I’d actually played the heads-up tournament last week. It gave me a lot of confidence that I could compete against these guys.”

Final table results:

  1. Jeremy Wien – $537,710 (~INR 3.62 crore)
  2. David Laka – $332,328
  3. Eric Blair – $228,307
  4. Jake Schindler – $159,575
  5. John Amato – $113,510
  6. Shawn Buchanan – $82,199
  7. David Peters – $60,618
  8. Richard Tuhrim – $45,538

Wien had a little over $200k in live cashes before today, and this was just his second live poker title. Not just was this his highest cash, but it also almost quadrupled his career live poker earnings. Keep reading GutshotMagazine.com for more updates on big wins at the 2018 World Series of Poker.
