Phil Hellmuth holds multiple World Series of Poker (WSOP) records, but one of his notable achievements is now shared with Jeremy Ausmus, a six-time bracelet winner. Ausmus, a Poker Hall of Fame nominee, has reached the final table of Event #91: $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. (8-Handed), propelling him to the top of the WSOP Player of the Year (PoY) race and making history.
In 2021, Hellmuth set the record for most (seven) official final table appearances in a single series in Las Vegas, despite not reaching any No-Limit Hold’em final tables. This record still stands, but as of Saturday evening, Ausmus has matched it with his seventh final-table appearance of the summer. Unlike Hellmuth in 2021, Ausmus hasn’t won a bracelet in 2024 yet, but he has a seventh chance in the $3K H.O.R.S.E. event.

Even though Ausmus doesn’t win a tournament this summer, his 2024 run will still be considered the greatest series ever without a bracelet, and possibly one of the best overall. Ausmus has made four final tables in NLH events, two in mixed games, and one in No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw, competing in a range of buy-ins from $1,500 to $250,000, including the prestigious $50,000 Poker Players Championship.

Ausmus’ performance at the 2024 WSOP has been record-setting, giving him a strong chance at winning PoY. However, he needs to dethrone Scott Seiver, who leads the PoY leaderboard with three bracelet wins in 2024. Seiver has 3,793 points, Ausmus has 3,510, and Chance Kornuth is third with 3,314, making it a two-player race with few events left.
The leaderboard will shift significantly after the $3K H.O.R.S.E. event concludes. Ausmus is guaranteed at least 273.36 points, enough to overtake Seiver, potentially gaining up to 994.03 points with a win. Seiver’s points will also increase as he competes at a $10,000 buy-in tournament final table on Sunday. Winning would make Seiver the first to win four bracelets in a year, one year before becoming Poker Hall of Fame eligible.
Ausmus started Day 3 of the H.O.R.S.E. event sixth in chips out of 17 players but fell back as the day progressed. Just before the final table, he doubled up Adrienne Carter in seven seven-card stud, dropping to the second shortest stack with nine players left. Carter eventually finished ninth, officially tying Ausmus with Hellmuth’s record. At publication, David “ODB” Baker led the chips, with first place paying $206,321.
