The 2024 World Poker Tour (WPT) Prime Championship broke records and crowned a new champion, Jereld Sam, who defeated a record-breaking 1,666 entries. The festival kicked off on 15th August and concluded at the Chamada Prestige Hotel & Casino.
Sam took home a career-best cash prize of TWD 8,065,000 ~($250,000) and a shiny new WPT Prime Championship trophy. Along with this, the winner also gets an entry to the WPT World Championship, to be held in December 2024.
Sam and eight other competitors crushed the competition to compete at the Final Table, out of the final 13 who returned to the felts on the last day of the Championship Event. The final play saw Sam and Oguri at the heads-up. The entire day’s play took around 10 hours, with a prize pool of TWD 51,389,500 (~$1,597,500).

In the heads up, in the final hand, Jereld Sam’s K ♣ J ♣ were higher than Oguri’s Q ♣ J ♦
On the occasion of his win, he said, “It was my tournament to win. I was the short stack with nothing to lose, so I was just aiming to win.” He also said that he was looking forward to the Vegas trip but would take a break first so that he would be settled for his next outing.

Sam is a prolific poker player from Singapore. His total live earnings before this event were $208,625.This one event has now almost doubled his total live earnings. His best live cash, before this event, was $52,435, earned when he placed first at Event #9 of Asian Poker Tour APT Hanoi Billions held in Vietnam in 2023. Jereld’s first recorded cash-out, according to Hendonmob, was when he placed 3rd at Event 3 of the Asian Poker Tour held at APT Cambodia in 2014. He cashed out $1660.
