Jeju Main Event sets the record for largest field in Korea

The Jeju Red Dragon festival began on 30th November at the Landing Casino in the South Korean city of Jeju. The series, hosted by PokerStars Live, is a 10-day series of high-stakes poker action, which will conclude on 9th December.

The Main Event of the series is the RED DRAGON KRW 1,000,000,000, and has two starting flights, one of which got over on 5th December. Six Indians participated on the first flight but only Sumit Sapra progressed, holding an above average stack.

In what was a record setting day for Korea, yesterday’s Main Event flight saw 237 entries sign up for a buy-in of KRW 2.2 million. This figure, combined with the 376 entries from Day 1A, brings the total field up to 613 – the new official record for the largest Main Event field in Korea’s history of poker tournaments.

A total of 93 players survived the day after some interesting poker action, adding to the 141 survivors of yesterday, making a total of 234 returning today for the Day 2 of the Main Event. All the returning players will have their eyes focussed on the trophy and the 1st place prize of KRW 266,060,000 (~INR ) out of a prize pool of KRW 1,226,000,000.

The chip leader to emerge from the 237-strong field after an 8-hour grind was Tian Le Wang with a stack of 144,100. He will be looking forward to play in the Main Event Day 2 today.

Le Wang was followed by Kun Wang with slightly lesser stack of 139,500 and Yipeng Huang with 115,900 chips. The top 7 chip leaders from Day 1B are all Chinese, reflecting the fact that majority of the field consisted of Chinese players.

Day 1A’s chip leader, Hao Qi Xie, still is the overall chip leader with 218,000 chips. He is the only player to cross the 200,000 mark. Some notables to finish the day successfully are Xuming Qi (113,800), Xing Long Huang (101,900), Tae Hoon Han (95,200), Yin Gui Li (63,600), Yoshitaka Okawa (46,400) and James Won Lee (31,600).

Some significant busts include PokerStars Team Pro Celinia Lin, Natural8 Team Hot ambassador Michael SoyzaYuan Li CheungWilson LimAlvan Zheng and Linh Tran.

The Day 2 of the RED DRAGON Main Event will commence today at 2pm local time. Blinds will increase every hour, and nine levels will be played in total, featuring an hour-long dinner break. The tournament is expected to wrap up around 12:30am followed by Day 3 on the next day.
