Jason Koon wins Triton short deck tournament

The 2018 Triton Super High Roller Series kicked off on 12th May at the Maestral Resort & Casino in Budva, Montenegro. A total of 4 events were scheduled for this high roller series and the final event has just come to an end, with American poker pro Jason Koon being crowned champion!

The HKD 1 million ($127,000) buy-in Short Deck Ante-Only Event was the final event of the series and it attracted a field of 103 entries, creating a massive prize pool of HKD 96,902,400 (~$12,344,397). The Triton tournament series was founded by Richard Yong and Paul Phua in 2015, and this became the largest tournament in Triton history, in terms of entries as well as prize pool.

Koon had over ten live poker titles to his name coming into this tournament, but this win would easily be one of the most special, beating some of the best pros around the world, to take home a career best prize of HKD 28,102,000 ($3,579,914) for first place, more than doubling his previous best of $1,650,300 at Bahamas last year. His career earnings have now crossed $16.5 million!

“I am so tired, my body, it’s been tired for four days. I mean, it’s good stress, but these stakes take a toll on you. Especially being on a final table like this. It was a challenge for me, physically and mentally. I will probably won’t be able to sleep for another five hours, you know how that is, so wound up on adrenaline, but once I fall asleep I don’t know when I am gonna wake up. I am really happy we got that done,” said Koon, after the tournament ended at around 5:30 am local time this morning. See his full interview here:

Final results:

  1. Jason Koon – HKD 28,102,000 (~INR 24.33 crore)
  2. Xuan Tan – HKD 18,121,000
  3. Phil Ivey – HKD 13,082,000
  4. Winfred Yu – HKD 9,206,000
  5. Rui Cao – HKD 6,299,000
  6. Peter Jetten – HKD 5,039,000

Part of the final table was USA’s Phil Ivey, who finished third for a handsome payout of $1,666,516. The series would’ve been a great one for him after a couple of quiet years. He also won the inaugural event of the Triton SHR series, beating 61 entries to take home $604,992.
