India’s Abhishek Paul wins title in APL Vietnam!

The Asia Poker League (APL) recently kicked off the third stop of their live poker calendar in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. Festivities at the Pro Poker Club kicked off on 15 November and plenty of side events have already concluded, while the prestigious Main Event is also taking place.

One of the side events to take place in APL Road Series Vol. 3 was the Hyper Turbo 1, and as the name suggests, this was a single-day turbo event which attracted a few entries and was over after a few hours of grinding. Just 18 entrants were recorded in the event that had a prize pool of VND 180,000,000 (~INR 5.47 lakh).

As decided by the tournament staff, this prize pool was to be shared among the top 3 finishers, with a minimum cash prize of VND 13,970,000, which was around 3x the return on the initial buy-in amount of VND 4,400,000. Eventually, it was one of the few Indian players in attendance that took down the trophy.

Since the 2018 WPT India series was also scheduled in Goa during the same time (13-19 November), most of India’s top pros stayed back in India, but Abhishek Paul had other ideas. He outlasted the field at the Hyper Turbo 1 Event, winning the title and a top prize of VND 34,920,000 (~INR 1.06 lakh).

Paul entered heads-up with a massive chip lead against Pasi Heinanen. Eventually, Heinanen shoved with Qs 7h but he was unfortunate to run into Paul’s Ah Kd. The board ran dry for both players and Paul won the event, taking home his maiden APL trophy and a useful bankroll addition.

1. Abhishek Paul – VND 34,920,000
2. Pasi Heinanen – VND 20,950,000
3. Azusa Maeda – VND 13,970,000
