Indian poker players have finally arrived on the global scene. The year 2024 is wrapping up, and it has been an eventful year for the poker industry and poker players, especially for Indian poker players. With the most elite among them playing at some of the biggest poker tournaments, the Indian poker players made a mark and grabbed headlines consistently.
It was indeed a proud moment for the Indian poker industry when the mere fact that two-time WSOP bracelet winner Santhosh Suvarna was playing at World Series of Poker’s WSOP Paradise earned an Instagram post from the organizer, arguably one of the biggest brands in the poker industry.
Santhosh Suvarna consistently grabs headlines in the poker industry. He is the only Indian to have two WSOP bracelets, the most valuable piece of poker jewellery. He shipped the first in 2023 at WSOP Europe, when he shipped the 50K Diamond High Roller (Bracelet Event #12), which had a prize of upwards of $690,000 (~₹5,80,18,482).
India’s Nishant Sharma created history by shipping the Main Event of a poker event thrice, with two of those victories coming in a row. He did that by shipping the ME of Poker Dream 13.

He had earlier shipped Poker Dream 10 and 11 ME. According to Sharma, the achievement is ‘one in a billion.’
Kunal Patni had a fantastic 2024 and has appeared on several ITM lists of the biggest poker tournaments worldwide. The Indian poker player ended 2023 with a bang, winning Event #34 High Roller: The Finale at USOP 2023 and taking home VND 2.4 Billion, which roughly translates to ₹82.5 Lakh. As the year began, Patni was featured at the $250K Super High Roller of WSOP 2024.
His name again appeared at the APT Taipei: Mini Main Event and his impressive run continued through most of the year. He lifted an APT trophy at Phu Quoc 2024, shipped Event #57: Baby Superstar Challenge, and took home VND 1,436,070,000.

Back in India, Patni was the captain of Deccan Aces, the team that won the Poker Sports League 6, adding yet another achievement to his hat.
Avneesh Munjal is fast gaining popularity in the poker community, and part of the reason for this is his exceptional performance at the APT Phu Quoc 2024. He shipped his first APT trophy by shipping the VND 60 million High Roller – Double Stack and taking home a career-best amount of VND 1.541 billion (~₹51.34 Lakh). Munjal had earlier grabbed headlines this year by shipping the Short Deck Event at the Vietnam Poker League (VPL) Summer Series Hanoi 2024, taking home VND 1,541,930,000 (₹~₹51.34 Lakh)
Ankit Ahuja has been playing poker for some time now. He made his first cash in 2011 when he shipped the $120 NLH at the 2011 Mega Stack Series in Las Vegas, taking home $7,438. Since then, he has played at some of the biggest poker games, including his multiple WSOP cashes in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, and others. He was the top player in the Global Poker Index for India in 2023. In 2024, he shipped the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) 2024 Edinburgh High Roller for a sum of £25,200. He also figured regularly at some of the biggest poker tours in 2024, including WPT Cambodia 2024 and EPT Paris 2024.
These are the top five Indian poker players who made a name for themselves in 2024 and made the Indian contingent proud. Names and feats like these keep aspiring poker players on their toes and give them hope that they, too, can achieve their dreams with the sheer grit and dedication needed to skill up and play.
