Indian Gaming Reacts to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Clarion Call

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is popular for his progressive ideas and has been one of the few world leaders who monitor youngsters’ gaming habits. Half a decade ago, he made a reference to PUBG during one of his interactions with students, one of the first times a world leader did so. And now, during his Republic Day speech, Mr. Modi spoke about his desire to see Indian youngsters and Indian IT Professionals drive global gaming.

He said, ‘There’s a huge market for global gaming. But even today, the people who inspire gaming and make those products are foreigners. India has a rich culture, and we can bring new talent to the world of gaming and attract every child in the world to our gaming products. I wish that Indian youngsters and IT and AI professionals would lead the gaming world, not playing. Our gaming products should reach every part of the world. Our animators can work all over the world.  We can make it big in animation”.

Nazara Tech Founder Nitish Mittersain and others respond to PM Narendra Modi’s clarion call

The quote instantly caused a stir online, and Nazara Technologies’ founder, Nitish Mittersain, had his own take on it. He said that this was the time to grab the opportunity and that he would write a letter to the Prime Minister elaborating on how stakeholders of the gaming industry could collaborate with the Government.

Anurag Choudhary, Founder & CEO of Felicity Games, also had a quote.  He said, “With India poised to be the world’s second-largest gaming market after China and nurturing a rapidly expanding talent pool, we are not only confident but also motivated by the Prime Minister’s vision and encouraging words shared at the Independence Day address. This will help enhance and shape a brighter future for over 30000 Indian game developers and publishers, and we are always eager to partner with and support these innovative developers on their journey to global success.”

Jay Sayta, a Technology and Gaming Lawyer, added his opinion. He said, “After interacting with gamers earlier this year, Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji highlighted India’s potential to be a global hub for game development in his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of Red Fort. The Hon’ble Prime Minister also impressed on game developers to highlight our rich culture and ancient legacy in creating new and innovative games.”

The Hon’ble Prime Minister’s focus and emphasis on growing the online gaming sector will certainly boost the confidence of game developers, online gaming companies, and investors. Hopefully, all departments and ministries will now work in close coordination, keeping in mind the ‘whole of government’ approach, and realize the Prime Minister’s vision of making India a global gaming hub and a key contributor to the digital economy by formulating industry-friendly policies and regulations.”

The Indian gaming scene has long been lagging, thanks to the prohibitive costs of gaming. A typical AAA game costs anything between ₹2000 and ₹4000. Also, the so-called gaming rig that would play such games comfortably costs upwards of ₹1,00,000.

However,  there is a strong but small gaming community in India, and that’s proven by the several gaming cafes that have existed and survived for decades. The scenario has progressed a bit, with subscription models like Microsoft Game Pass and Steam’s software-only approach making gaming affordable to Indians.

Mobile gaming has changed the Indian mindset towards gaming, with AAA-quality games available for free or on a freemium basis. However, very few Indian game programmers and publishers are in the fray.
