Inaugural WSOP China this December

In July 2017, a deal was signed between WSOP (World Series of Poker) and Chinese mobile gaming giant Tencent, with the primary motive of promoting the game of poker in China and other parts of Asia. WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart made this huge announcement at the opening of the 48th World Series of Poker Main Event.

Since WSOP’s inception in 1970, the event has been played mostly in America, with visits to continents like South America, Europe and Australia. This partnership with Tencent (China’s largest internet company) will see the game of poker grow in China and neighbouring countries; the WSOP brand will appear in the Tencent social poker app in China.

Tencent and WSOP will now pair up to host the first ever World Series of Poker in China, which will be played in the Shangri-La Resort and Spa in Sanya, Hainan (an island in China which is also the country’s southern-most point). Sanya began hosting live poker events since December 2016 but this partnership will take the game to the next level.

WSOP China is set to be hosted between 13th and 22nd December 2017, and the event will attract some of the top poker professionals from around the world. The main event will be for those who have featured in tournaments and qualified via the Tencent app. An estimate of over 800,000 players will have participated in qualifiers and around 800 will compete in the WSOP China main event.
