Poker, one of the most popular casino games of all. A test of skill and luck, all at once. It’s no surprise that this is such a beloved game since it’s so deeply tactical and competitive. It’s not like just pulling a slot machine lever and waiting to see what happens. In poker, you’re in charge, free to make your own moves, place bets big and small, and build your strategy.
But how many chips do you start with in poker? Loads of new players wonder about that. Let’s find out the answer.
Like a lot of gambling topics, there’s actually not a singular answer to this question. It’s not like you to have a specific amount of chips for every single game of poker, or that you should have precisely 50 chips before starting to play. Instead, there are just guidelines and recommendations to keep in mind when considering the size of a player’s starting stack.
Lots of poker pros and fans, for example, would say a starting stack of around 30 to 50 chips is just fine for most players. In some cases, a stack of up to 100 chips is a good starter. Each stack should be made up of different coloured chips, too. For those who are new – each colour chip has its own distinct valuation.
In the U.S., for example – which has more poker tables than anywhere else – the values are:
So, when dividing chips between players and setting starting stacks, to have a fair and equal game, it’s good to make sure they’ve all got the same amounts of each colour. X number of black ones, Y number of red ones, and so on.
Here’s how ideal chip counts vary from one situation to another:
Anywhere from 25-50 chips is usually considered fair and fine for Texas Hold’em, which is one of the most popular poker variants. But in poker tournaments, competitors sometimes have literally hundreds of chips to kick off with, or even thousands in some cases, which leads to long and drawn-out games with a lot of back and forth action.
So really, it just depends on how you’re playing and how much you want to risk and how long you want your game to be. Bigger stacks equal longer and more complex games, but have bigger risks.
Again, this really depends on how you’re playing. Let’s say you’re playing a simple game at home with a friend. You could just get your total number of chips and split them halfway between you. For a faster game, go for smaller starting stacks of 50-100. Or for a longer and more in-depth clash, give each other more chips.

If you’re giving poker a try online, like using your 1Win Bonus to test your skills against players around the world, what’s a good stack to kick off with? Well, that depends on the casino and the stakes of the table. Some tables have higher stakes that bring bigger starting stacks, others are more beginner-oriented.
If you’re a relative newbie, experts recommend kicking things off with a smaller stack and lower-stakes table to get the feel of the game. Then build up. You can start with just 30-50 chips and go up to 100 later.
Let’s just say you’re playing a game of poker with your pals at home. You’ve bought a poker set with a certain amount of chips, and you need to divvy them up among the players. Well, in that case, the most obvious and straightforward play is to count up the number of players you’ve got, and then divide your total number of chips by that amount.
Say you’ve got 300 chips, for example, and six players round the table. 300/6 is 50, so everyone gets 50 chips to kick things off. Just remember to ensure they’re all evenly distributed in terms of the colours, so no player ends up advantaged or disadvantaged right from the off.
So, all in all, there’s no hard and fast rule saying you must have X amount of chips in your starter stack. But it’s still good practice to make sure all players at the table have similar or identical stacks to kick things off, with fair amounts for everyone. And remember – the bigger your stack, the more you stand to lose, so only use what you’re happy to part with.
