Goa offshore casinos get 6 months extension

According to reports across media agencies, the Goa government has granted an extension of six months to casinos operating on Mandovi River, state Public Works Department Minister Sudin Dhavalikar said on Saturday.

A 6-month extension granted earlier in April this year will expire Sunday and the latest extension allows these off-shore casinos on the river to operate till March 30, 2019, he said. “Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has signed the cabinet note (in this connection),” said Dhavalikar.

The Goa government is currently in the process of drafting a casino policy that will spell out the future course of action to shift them from the river.

There are six offshore casinos operating on the Mandovi River and all of these along with 12 other gaming establishments which are located inside the various 5-star properties in Goa will remain shuttered on 02 October due to Gandhi Jayanti. Under Secretary (Home) Neetal Amonkar released a statement earlier in the week saying, “Every year, the Government of Goa observes dry day on October 2 in order to pay homage and respect to the Father of the Nation. In this regard, all the casino licensees shall stop the operations on October 2.”

Casino operators and gaming enthusiasts will now wait till March to see how the local goverment decides to tackle the shifting issue.
