Goa Government Plans to Recover ₹350 Crore in Pending Casino Dues

The Goa Government is grappling with some issue over pending casino dues. Leader of Opposition, Yuri Alemao has demanded swift action to recover ₹350 Crore in outstanding dues from Goa’s land-based casinos. He also called for suspending casino licenses until all pending payments are settled.

Alemao criticized the state government for its failure to enforce financial accountability in the casino sector. He urged authorities to take swift action, stating, “The government must strictly enforce regulations and recover these dues without delay.”

In response, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured that efforts are in progress to recover the pending ₹350 Crore before the financial year ends on 31st March. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to financial compliance, stating, “We are taking all necessary steps to recover the dues, and strict action will be taken if required.”

Sawant revealed that three casino licenses have already been suspended as part of regulatory enforcement. He also mentined that some  pending dues is entangled in legal disputes, which could slow the recovery process. So far, ₹110 Crore has been collected from the outstanding amount.

Goa currently has 15 operational land-based casinos, and concerns were raised regarding live gaming in these establishments. Sawant dismissed these claims, emphasizing that regular inspections ensure compliance. “Any casino found violating regulations will face strict action,” he stated.

In India, the real money gaming industry has been facing some challenges. The Indian Government has been having some issues with the real money gaming industry for some time now, with the biggest onslaught being the 18% retrospective GST aspect that’s hanging over the industry for a while now. Goa is one of the few states that allows live poker, along with Sikkim.

However, there have been some positive updates about online gaming in India, with Karnataka Government even saying that it should be the hub of online games in the coming years.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Government had placed severe restrictions on poker, and several poker organisers had challenged that rule in court. The date for that suit’s final hearing is set to 27th March.

Meanwhile, Indian real money gaming companies are going ahead with some of the biggest online poker series, including the National Poker Series 2025, which had a total GTD of ₹100 Crore, with ₹10 Crore being the GTD of the Main Event.

It remains to be seen how the current issue between the Goa Government and the casinos there plays out.
