FIFS rooting for strong comeback of fantasy sports

The Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS), the industry body for self-regulation in the sector is eyeing for a strong comeback for fantasy gaming firms with return of live sports like football, cricket, basketball and so on in different parts of the world. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, all live sports have come to a standstill to ensure the protection and safety of the players, fans and staff.

In fact, between April to June, over 1,000 sports matches were hosted across Indian fantasy sports platforms, which saw engagement of 5+ million fans. Indian fantasy sports platforms also introduced new sports like Baseball, Handball and Rugby to their offerings. With some fast recovering from COVID-19, they have begun to reopen some of live sport events. Fantasy firms have a great opportunity to boost back into business as digital fan engagement has been increasing.

Some the tournaments include global mainstream sporting events such as Bundesliga, La Liga, EPL, FA Cup, and Coppa Italia while others were from places like Austria, Caribbean Islands, Australia and Russia. International cricket – England versus West Indies was televised yesterday after 117 days. UEFA Champions League football, NBA basketball and many more yet to go live along with the already live events in the coming weeks.

“Sports industry is witnessing a speedy resumption after a long hiatus across the world. Major leagues like EPL, LA Liga are already live, and some of the other international and domestic cricket tournaments have come out with the scheduled dates. With sports resuming, the fantasy sports industry is seeing an uptick in user engagement on their platforms,” said Amrit Mathur, strategic advisor, FIFS.

He further added, “Fantasy Sports has been one of the essential digital mediums to deeply engage fans with the sports they love. We are sure to see even more engagement on Fantasy Sports than pre-Covid times.” For more updates on fantasy sports and gaming, keep reading GutshotMagazine.com and stay tuned!
