Explaining the Gap Concept in Poker

Professional writer David Sklansky was the first one to introduce the “Gap Concept” to the poker world. However, the year it was first used in is uncertain.

Basically, it suggests that you need a much better hand to call a raise than to make the first one. The distance changes over the course. For instance, when a TAG (tight-aggressive) opens the pot the distance increases and you would need a much better hand to even consider calling. On the other hand, when a LAG (loose-aggressive) opens, you can call with a larger range of hands.

You decide the size of the ‘gap’ by yourself using the information at hand about the original raiser and the table dynamics. The ‘Gap’ is essentially the distance between the strength of the original raiser’s hand and the hand contemplating the calling of the raise.

Point of advice – Make sure your hand is good enough to call with in the first place.

Hope this puts some clarity on the ‘Gap’ concept in poker. If you have any doubts please feel free to drop a comment below. Also, keep reading GutshotMagazine.com for similar ‘Poker Gyaan’ articles.
