Derek McMaster wins Event #4 Omaha at WSOP 2019

A little under a week since the start of the prestigious World Series of Poker (WSOP) and 3 of the total 89 gold bracelets have been given away already. While BIG 50 has been underway since a few days and several Indians are a part of that field, the latest tournament to come to an end in Las Vegas was Event #4: $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better.

USA’s Derek McMaster turned out to be the eventual champion who not only won his first WSOP gold bracelet, but it was also his first Final Table and moreover, first WSOP cash! Speaking about the achievement, he said, “It was very surreal to me, I’ve just been on cloud nine since last night, just happy to be here and enjoyed playing with these guys. We have a lot of poker players in town for whatever reason, and they just happened to be here today which I’m happy for!”

It was a mighty fine performance from McMaster, outlasting an 853-player field and winning the top prize of $228,228 (~INR 1.58 Crore). In heads-up, he outlasted countryman Jason Berilgen and 8 of the 9 on the FT were in fact, all from USA. The 2018 WSOP Player-of-the-Year award runner-up Ben Yu was also on the FT of this Omaha tournament, finishing in 7th place for around $27k.

Seven players returned yesterday for the final day of the tournament. Of them, Ben Yu was the first to bust followed by Tom McCormick. Incidentally, this was McCormick’s 15th appearance on the Final Table of a WSOP tournament, but he is yet to end victorious in one.
