Kid Poker’ Daniel Negreanu is among some of the top poker players in the world, having won 6 WSOP (World Series of Poker) bracelets, but he hasn’t been having a great time in the recent past. He said he needed to work on his game, and that’s exactly what he did, coming back and reaching the heads-up stage of the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic $100,000 Super High Roller.
While he would’ve had his eyes set on the mega prize, it was Dan Smith who came in his way, denying Negreanu of the $1.4 million prize for first place. The event was conducted at the Bellagio Poker Room in Las Vegas; after a series of smaller buy-in events, this high-roller event had a massive buy-in of $100,000. 39 entries meant that players were in it for a prize pool of $3.9 million (to be paid out to the top 6).
Isaac Haxton was the chip leader moving into the final 5, but he couldn’t capitalize on his advantage, crashing out and finishing at 4th, for a prize of $390,000. For Dan Smith, his winning of $1,404,000 was the third-biggest cash of his career, taking his career poker earnings to over $19 million.
In the heads-up, Negreanu was dealt a Q-10, while Smith was dealt A-K. The flop saw J-10-4, with Negreanu in the lead (one pair). The turn saw a 7 with Negreanu still in the lead, while the all-important river card yielded a Q. Negreanu’s 2-pair was no match for the straight that Smith got on the river. Once before in 2013, Smith also won the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic Main Event – $1,161,135.
