Corporator and six others arrested in gambling den raid in Hyderabad

The world is going through a severe health crisis and in India itself, about 110K+ cases of COVID-19 positive have been registered. The Prime Minister has extended the lockdown and non-essentials are yet to open their doors. While the crisis is at its peak, maintaining social distancing and staying home is the only option for citizens. The police force is also quite vigilant with the activities taking place in their respective areas. While majority are abiding by the rules, a few others are engaging breaking the rules.

On a Monday night in Hyderabad, police captured seven individuals including a Corporator of Jawaharnagar Municipal Corporation who were involved in playing cards at a house at Kasturba Nagar in Moula Ali. The police on spot seized up to INR 1.2 Lakh in cash, cell phones, and other materials. The raid was conducted by a team of Malkajgiri police and found the Corporator playing with his friends who were all merchants and residents of ECIL, Moula Ali and Malkajgiri. One of the police said, “they were playing the three card game which is illegal.”

For quite some time, Bengaluru city was in the headlines for such raids. In late April, Central Crime Bench police raided two gambling dens in Subramanyapura and Varthur Club and arrested more than 20 individuals, combined from both locations. In early April, a mob of 12 men allegedly thrashed a policeman after their gambling racket was busted near Bengaluru-Mysuru Road in Karnataka. While many ran away in panic when police entered the den, one person decided to take out his frustration on the police.

However, talking about the current raid, a case been registered against the individuals under Gaming Act, 188 of IPC, Disaster Management Act and Epidemic Diesases Act for violation of lockdown norms.
