8 Common Poker Player Types & How To Beat Them Online

Playing online poker or any other real money game online can be tricky and challenging. It’s difficult to play against opponents you can’t see, making it impossible to read their tells. However, the challenge lies in understanding the playing styles of these invisible opponents and adapting your game plan accordingly. In online poker, players can be categorised into several distinct types based on their playing styles and tendencies. Recognising these player types is crucial. It allows you to develop your own unique style and tailor your strategies for optimal play against each type.

Types of online poker players

1. Tight-Aggressive (TAG): A Tight-Aggressive player, or TAG, plays few hands but plays them aggressively. They are disciplined and make calculated bets and raises. For example, a TAG might only play strong hands like pocket aces or pocket kings and will bet or raise aggressively when they do. Their strength lies in their discipline, but because they don’t mix up their strategy, they can be the most predictable on the table.

2. Loose-Aggressive (LAG): A Loose-Aggressive player plays many hands and plays them aggressively. They are difficult to read and put a lot of pressure on their opponents. For instance, a LAG might play hands like 7-8 suited and bet or raise frequently. Their aggressive style can lead to big wins, but it also makes them prone to large swings and over-aggression.

3. Tight-Passive (The Rock): A Tight-Passive player, often called ‘The Rock,’ plays few hands and does so passively. They rarely lose big pots and wait for strong hands. For example, a Rock might only play premium hands like pocket aces or pocket kings and will often just call rather than raise. Their weakness is that they can be easily exploited by aggressive players and miss opportunities to maximise value.

4. Loose-Passive (Calling Station): A Loose-Passive player, or Calling Station, plays many hands but plays them passively. They often call too much and rarely bet or raise. For instance, a Calling Station might play hands like 9-10 off-suit and call bets frequently. Their strength is that they can occasionally catch opponents off guard with unexpected hands, but they are easy to exploit due to their frequent calling.

5. The Maniac: A Maniac plays many hands and plays them extremely aggressively. They create chaos at the table and can win big pots through sheer aggression. For example, a Maniac might play hands like 5-6 suited and bet or raise on every street. Their weakness is their high volatility, often losing big pots due to reckless play.

6. The Nit: A Nit is extremely tight and very conservative, preferring to play only strong hands. They are very disciplined and rarely get involved in marginal situations. For instance, a Nit might only play hands like pocket aces or pocket kings and fold everything else. Their weakness is that they are highly predictable and can be easily bluffed out of pots.

7. The Shark: A Shark is a highly skilled, adaptable, and often professional player. They read opponents well and adjust their strategy effectively. For example, a Shark might play a wide range of hands and use different strategies depending on their opponents. Their strength is their skill and adaptability, though they can sometimes be overconfident.

8. The Fish: A Fish is inexperienced and makes frequent mistakes. They are easily exploited by more experienced players. For instance, a Fish might play hands like 2-7 off-suit and call bets without considering the strength of their hand. Their strength is that they can occasionally get lucky, but they often lose money due to inexperience.
