Centre Mulls Framework For Indian Gaming Industry

According to reports, the Government of India is planning to bring the Indian online gaming industry under a unified central framework, replacing the existing state laws that currently govern online gaming platforms. This move aims to streamline regulations, ensure consistency, and promote responsible gaming while fostering growth in a rapidly expanding sector.

At present, online gaming in India is governed by a patchwork of state laws, leading to regulatory uncertainty. Different states have their own interpretations of what constitutes gambling versus skill-based gaming, resulting in a fragmented legal landscape.

The Indian gaming industry has witnessed explosive growth, with an estimated worth of over $3 Billion, and projections suggest further expansion. To sustain this growth, precise and uniform regulations are necessary. The government’s plan to bring gaming under a single central law seeks to resolve these challenges and create a stable regulatory environment.

This is the latest salvo that the Indian Government has fired towards the Indian online and real-money gaming industry. Real money gaming has a checkered history in the country, with some states outright banning the activity while others, like Goa, allow off-shore casinos.

For obvious reasons, states that enable poker and real-money gaming boost tourism. However, with the government considering a central law, states might lose the freedom to decide whether to allow these activities within their territorial boundaries. We will keep you updated about any developments in this story.

A central law governing online gaming might seem the best approach going forward, but several creases need to be cleared before any of this works.
