Casinos In Goa To Remain Shut As State Government Extends Curfew

The Goa state government extended the COVID-19 restrictions in the state on Monday. The new order, issued by the state government, adds that the curfew restrictions will continue till 7 AM on July 26th, 2021.

Chief Minister of Goa, Dr. Pramod Sawant in a tweet said, “The State Level Curfew order will be extended up to 7 AM, July 26, with the same restrictions and relaxations.”

In compliance with the new orders from the state government, Delta Corp, one of the largest casino operators in the country, announced that its casinos in Goa will continue to remain shut.

In an exchange filing, Delta Corp said, “Due to the surge in COVID-19 cases being witnessed in Goa, the Government of Goa inter-alia has extended the restrictions in the state till July 26th, 2021. Accordingly, the casinos operated by the company and its subsidiaries in Goa will remain closed during this period.”

Curfew restrictions were first imposed in Goa on May 9th, 2021, and have been extended from time to time since then. Casinos among other businesses have remained shut ever since. Delta Corp stated earlier that estimating losses due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions is difficult.

Apart from Goa, the company also runs casinos in Sikkim along with other states. The Sikkim state government  had eased the restrictions in the state earlier this month. As a result, the company resumed its operations in Sikkim from July 6th, 2021.

The shares of Delta Corp had shot up by over 5%, when the news of resumption of casinos in Sikkim was announced. However, now that the news of extended curfew in Goa was announced, the shares of the company traded over 1% lower on Monday at the Bombay Stock exchange (BSE).
