Borgata to hunt Phil Ivey’s properties in Nevada

Ten-time WSOP bracelet winner and international poker celebrity Phil Ivey has been involved in a legal brawl with the famous Atlantic City Borgata Casino and Spa for using a technique called ‘edge-sorting’ in the game of Baccarat. He and his partner Cheung Yin Sun had earned a total of $9.6 million from casino playing for as much as $100k per hand. This happened over the course of 2010 to 2012.

After years of legal battles involving huge sums, the court had finally ruled in favour of Borgata, who had won a $10.16 million judgment against Ivey, but Borgata had soon learnt that collecting that money from Ivey was harder than it thought, since it wasn’t able to find a single bank in New Jersey where Ivey had a bank account.

On 29th January, a US District Court has approved Borgata’s request to docket Ivey’s properties in the state of Nevada. Judge Noel L. Hillman approved the same within a day of submitting the request. Ivey was then scheduled for a deposition related to the case the following day, but it’s unclear whether that happened or not.

In the request that was approved, Borgata said, “Ivey’s holdings have been estimated at $100 million, and the above shows these holdings, at least those that are ascertainable, are based in Nevada.” Earlier, Ivey had delayed paying the $10.16 million he currently owes as a supersedeas bond, and for the court to consider hearing the case, Ivey has to pay this amount which is equal to the disputed amount.

The Borgata edge sorting case is second of two such incidents that Ivey is involved in. Ivey earlier went to court in another similar baccarat cheating case played in Crockfords Casino, London. He was to collect £7.7 million in winnings but never did. Ivey ultimately lost that case in 2017 when the UK Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favour of Crockfords in Ivey’s last appeal.

Since Ivey hasn’t appeared in court till now in this regard, there seems to be no reaction of his online or anywhere. It is to be seen whether the court will again rule in Borgata’s favour when Ivey will appeal to the court.
