Bengaluru Techie Claims Fraud In Poker App Caused 3Cr Loss

As per a recent report available on Times Of India dated 7th Dec 2024, a software engineer from Bengaluru has filed a police complaint against a popular poker brand, alleging that the company cheated him, leading to a loss of ₹3 Crore on the platform. The complaint, filed on 5th December, contends that the app indulged in blatant fraudulent activities.

The complaint is against Bengaluru-based app called Pocket52, operated by Nirdesa Networks Private Limited. The complainant, whose name was not revealed, mentioned that the GamesKraft CEO and Pocket52’s leadership team cheated him. He went on to mention that GamesKraft is a partner of Pocket52.

According to the complainant, he created his Pocket52 account in April 2023 and played poker until December 2024. He said that while he invested smaller amounts like ₹100 and won, he consistently lost money after he began playing for higher amounts, like ₹1 Lakh. The complainant claimed that Pocket52 admitted that the fraud was occurring on their platform, but didn’t disclose the full extent of it.

He also claimed that when he contacted customer support, they could only suggest that he play at smaller tables to increase his chances of winning. He also said that the company sometimes deposited money into the dormant accounts, enticing them to continue gaming on the platform, and that certain refunds were even being processed by the company in smaller amounts.

The complainant has listed several glitches he saw during his gameplay and even hinted at two players colluding to ensure larger pot wins. He also claimed that when he contacted Pocket52 customer care, they refused to share the number of the legal head with him. One example of a glitch was that he saw two nines of clubs (only one in a deck) in a single hand, which could be a faulty Random Number Generator (RNG) or manipulation for cheating.

When he searched for hand history on the app, it wasn’t available and when he requested for his gaming data, that was denied as well. It’s believed that the complaint has been filed under the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 318 (cheating) and the matter is currently being investigated. 

Poker and the real money gaming industry are gaining a foothold in the Indian mainstream, and there are several indications that the government is now looking at online gaming in a positive light, with Shri Priyank Kharge, Government of Karnataka’s Minister of Information Technology and Biotechnology, announcing that Karnataka could be the gaming capital of not just India but Asia.

Also, with so many Indian poker players making forays into the foreign poker and gaming market, it is only a matter of time before games like poker get more accreditation. Already, poker has been inducted as a mind sport.
