In a recent development, the Bangladesh Government has set up a 7-member committee to curb the promotion of betting apps by celebrities. The Asian country has been coming down heavily on online betting and gambling for a while now, and this is the Government’s latest salvo against real-money gaming.
According to reports, the Government has asked seven officials to investigate the matter, including the Secretaries of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and the Inspector General of Police will also be involved in the investigation.
The committee will conduct a thorough investigation into online gambling platforms, including the involvement of celebrities in promoting these apps. How this investigation proceeds and what steps the Bangladesh Government takes afterwards remain to be seen.
Celebrities do sign up as brand ambassadors for online gambling apps. Several of them are also influencers, so even if they don’t feature in ads, they sometimes post messages promoting such apps on their social media handles. There appears to be a difference in this trend, though, with some gaming apps now seeking to sign industry experts and players, rather than relying solely on celebrities, such as actors.

Most kinds of gambling are banned in Bangladesh, and the online gambling apps come under a grey area, because the laws have not been updated. Online casinos are now a growing trend in the country, and there seems to be an intent to crack down on them.
There is, of course, a difference between a player becoming a brand ambassador for a gaming company and an actor doing the same. While the actor will likely be the significant feature in advertisements for the brand, a player might also need to be present at some live events promoted and sponsored by the company.
Poker and real-money gaming are becoming one of the largest markets in Asia, with several live tournaments now taking place in various countries on the continent. International poker brands, such as the Asian Poker Tour and the Asia Pacific Poker Tour, routinely host their poker tournaments in multiple countries across the continent.
