Ashish Ahuja takes 15th place in Event #34 for $37k

We’ve witnessed another stellar performance by one of our very own Indian poker players in Las Vegas. There’s no bracelet as yet but we’ve come close a couple of times. The most recent run came to an end a few hours ago when Ashish Ahuja ended in 15th place from a massive original field of 6,214 entries.

The WSOP 2019 tournament we’re talking about here is Event #34: $1,000 Double Stack No-Limit Hold’em, where several Indians participated and a few cashed as well. However, Ahuja was the only one to progress to Day 4, holding a stack of 6+ million among the final 40 players.

He returned to Rio All Suites today for Day 4 and continued playing some brilliant poker before it was his time to exit the tournament. There were a number of big names in contention and Ahuja was second to none on the day. Eventually, he ran into South Korea’s Joseph Cheong, a player who has over $13 million in live poker cashes.

Ahuja shoved around 9.8 million chips from the Big Blind and received a call from Cheong. Our Indian pro revealed Queens and Cheong showed A8. The board rolled out 9 T A 6 5 and with Cheong flopping top pair, it was the end of an amazing run for Ahuja, busting in 15th place for $37,421 (~INR 26.05 Lakh).

Play continued on Day 4 until only 6 players were left. Cheong eventually ended as the chip leader among these players with a massive stack of 100,300,000 chips, followed by David Ivers in second place with 60,400,000 chips. When they return on Day 5, there’s $687,782 up for grabs for first place and also a prestigious gold bracelet.

Chip counts:

  1. Joseph Cheong – 100,300,000
  2. David Ivers – 60,400,000
  3. Zinan Xu – 53,900,000
  4. Andrea Buonocore – 17,800,000
  5. Ido Ashkenazi – 11,700,000
  6. Arianna Son – 4,500,000
