APL Hanoi Main Event draws 503 entries on debut

Just yesterday, we spoke about the massive turnout that Asia Poker League (APL) received on the first run of their Kick-Off Event in Hanoi, eventually won by Nguyen Le Quang. The VND 16,500,000 (~INR 50k) Main Event was the next major event taking place simultaneously at the Loyal Poker Club and this tournament attracted a spectacular field as well.

Four starting flights were scheduled and from them, a total of 503 entries joined the tournament including a couple of Indian players as well. As usual, the final flight saw the biggest turnout of 215 entries and from all of these flights, we had a total of 114 survivors going to Day 2, led by Vietnam’s Ly Tran Tien (1C) who has 450k chips. Korea’s Hwah Young Kim closed Day 1D with 444k chips.

Starting flights breakdown:

• 1A – 14 advanced from 49 entries
• 1B – 18 advanced from 106 entries
• 1C – 28 advanced from 133 entries
• 1D – 54 advanced from 215 entries

The Main Event had a guarantee of VND 6 Billion, but this good turnout means the inaugural Main Event at Hanoi will have an increased prize pool of VND 8 Billion which roughly adds up to around INR 2.4 Crore. Some notables in the field progressing to Day 2 were Soo Jo Kim (236k), Quang Nguyen (218k) and Cao Ngoc Anh (198k).

Day 2 top 10 chip counts:

1. Ly Tran Tien – 450,000
2. Hwah Young Kim – 444,000
3. Nguyen Ngoc Dai – 390,000
4. Doan Tien Thanh – 332,000
5. Steve Nguyen – 328,000
6. Rajesh Sabapathy – 327,000
7. Luong Anh Tuan – 278,500
8. Tran Hieu – 277,500
9. Nguyen Van Sang – 275,500
10. Tran Nam Trung – 264,000

The High Roller was another major tournament taking place at the venue with a buy-in of VND 27,000,000 (~INR 82,000). A field of 41 entries joined and by the end of the event, it was Nang Quang Nguyen who took home top honours, beating Soo Jo Kim in heads-up and claiming the VND 407 million (~$17,600) top prize.
